Piebugs are a creature native to Fantasy Australia.
They are similar in appearance to pillbugs (Armadillidiidae), being an isopod crustacean which have adapted to terrestrial conditions. They have a tough segmented shell (exoskeleton) over a flattened body with multiple pairs of jointed legs. However, they are generally about two feet (sixty centimetres) in length, and about one foot (thirty centimetres) across.
Unlike most Fantasy Australian animals, piebugs are very placid and not inclined to attempt to kill humanoids or other animals. This makes them an attractive prey species, despite their strong shells. As a result, they have evolved to burrow deep into the ground. While humanoids still mine them, this burrowing protects them from most predators.
Piebugs communicate in warbling and cooing sounds. They can be easily tamed and kept as pets.
