As you approach the fryer, it starts to bubble ominously, and the top of a head starts to rise out of the bubbling oil. It is a deep-fried head - and it continues to rise, there is a deep-fried torso, and there is a humanoid figure rising out of the oil, he's waist-deep and he's looking at you with horrible, scary, ghostly, eyes.

History[]

Duncan Dongnuts was a resident of the town of Gunnacarkit and employed by Solomon Brumby at his bakery. Through circumstances that are not fully explained, he accidentally dipped his testicles into bubbling hot oil, frying them. Either due to his injuries or at the hand of Solomon Brumby, he was killed, and his body taken down to the basement. Duncan's ghost remained tied to the deep fat fryer in the bakery.

Characteristics[]

Duncan is the ghost of a human male who can be seen only from the waist up. He is chatty and initially acts friendly, with implied lecherous intentions in his initial interactions, but quickly becomes stubborn and angry, insisting that the group play a game with him and give up important things in order to guess his name.

Episodes[]

Episode 13: Spookaroo Special, The Haunted Bakery Part 2[]

One of the sets of skeletal remains found in the basement of the bakery is noted to be charred and blackened.

As Gadai, McKenzie and Plank approach the deep fat fryer in the main room of the bakery, a ghost rises up out of it until he appears to be waist-deep in oil. The group engages the ghost in conversation, and when Plank suggests he can guess the ghost's name, the ghost asks if they would like to play a game: they can make guesses as to his name, but for each wrong answer that they give, or for each clue that the ghost gives them, they must put something valuable to them into the oil. Although he is wearing a name badge, it is covered in batter, which the ghost rubs aside to reveal the surname "Dongnuts".

When the group ask for a clue, he refuses until they sacrifice something valuable to them, turning down Plank's offer of his self-respect. Once Plank strips to put his piebug costume into the oil, the ghost says, "My name isn't just who I am, it's what I was accidentally doing to my balls in this fryer."

The guess of "Fry" is incorrect, so the ghost demands another item. McKenzie attempts to bargain to get two clues for the Smart Arse (Cap) but the ghost refuses. When she puts in the cap, the ghost says, "My name starts with the lonely thing above my burned-off balls."

The group discusses possibilities for a while, ostensibly among themselves, but the ghost repeatedly interjects to mock their ideas and to be annoyed at Plank's returned mockery. Eventually, Gadai offers to put in all of the hair on her head, and her eyebrows, and the ghost says, "You'd love to have a beer with me, mate."

Gadai realises the ghost's name is Duncan, and he explains the clues that he gave before bubbling back down into the oil.

Trivia[]

  • "You'd love to have a beer with me" is a reference to the 1980 song "Duncan" by Australian band "Slim Dusty" which was number one in Australian charts for two weeks in early 1981.
  • Although McKenzie only got one clue in return for the Smart Arse (Cap), she actually got a clue and paid off the penalty for having an incorrect answer, as if the Smart Arse had counted as two items.
  • It is not known exactly what killed Duncan Dongnuts.
